"Practical men who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist." John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) "The economy" seems like a distant and abstract thing to many people, yet the kind of economy we have has a huge impact on our lives, affecting how easy or difficult it is to find work, how well or badly we will be paid, what kind of a home we will be able to afford, and how much (if any) we will have left over to spend on leisure activities or holidays. We will be looking at several proposals for the best way to run the economy, specifically free market economics, keynesian demand management, and "post-growth economics", which challenges the whole idea that growth of national GDP is the sacred aim of all governments. Speakers to include: Prof David Vines, Balliol College, Oxford. Dr Rupert Read, Chair, Green House. As well as the speakers, we will hear the views of local people in Abingdon, video clips of famous economists BRING AND SHARE PICNIC LUNCH AND IF YOU CAN, A DONATION TO HELP OUR WORK!
