On 21st April, business leaders from the SME community will make the case for boards and owners to ensure the rising threats to the cyber security of their business are considered seriously. Many SMEs fail to do so, despite the fact that it now makes up over half the number of reported crimes in England and Wales, with report after report highlighting the impact on the business community.

The event will be opened by Nicola Blackwood, MP for Oxford West and Abingdon and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Innovation. Nicola chaired Parliament’s Science & Technology Select Committee between June 2015 and July 2016. This is an executive responsibility, not a technical challenge that can simply be delegated to the IT team. After all, most crimes involve a member of staff accidentally doing something to enable the crime. Businesses have shown that being able to demonstrate a proactive approach to securing information can be a positive differentiator.

The event is being put on by the Oxford & Thames Valley Cyber Security Clusters and Cyber Oxford with the support of the European Space Agency at Harwell.
