Join the official launch of "The Bottom Up Media Revolution: How Social Entrepreneurs Around the World Are Building Trust Between Communities and the Media," Co-Authored by Laxmi Parthasarathy and Dr. Michael Gordon. The content of this moderated discussion will revolve around the findings of a global study conducted by Ashoka and the Center for Social Impact at the University of Michigan.
It looks at social entrepreneurs promoting media innovations and reveals important lessons—spanning strategies to represent marginalized voices to partnership models within and beyond the media industry—for how to transform the media. Ashoka has identified and supported over 3,500 “Ashoka Fellows,” many of whom are in the media sector. They analyzed these Fellows to understand how social entrepreneurs around the world are trying to improve the media landscape, assessed the most successful approaches, and identified gaps that social entrepreneurship has not yet filled. The discussion will feature the example of Global Press Institute Founded by Ashoka Fellow, Cristi Hegranes. Global Press Institute (GPI) uses journalism as a development tool to train and employ women in developing media markets to produce high-quality local news coverage that elevates local and global awareness and ignites social change. After completing the Institute’s 24-module training program, trainees are employed as professional reporters at Global Press Journal.
