How do universities express priorities for innovation and entrepreneurship through their strategic plans and mission statements? Presenter Randy Hall and his research team have analyzed the text of strategic plans at highly ranked universities to assess strategy for “inside innovation” (improvement in the institution for practices and offerings) and “outside innovation” (transferring knowledge to companies for commercialization). The work includes quantifying word frequencies and word usages such as innovation, entrepreneurship, and transformation. He will present findings and their implications for how universities can be more impactful through both innovative change inside (improved learning, research practices, degree programs, clinical services, etc.) as well as innovative university-industry engagement, supporting commercialization, start-ups and economic development.
