In this session, I invite a conversation about trauma at work, drawing on studies of personally traumatic events that affect individuals’ working lives, as well as traumas occurring in the course of work. Alongside research on the devastating impact of trauma are studies showing that people cope, recover, and may even grow from their painful experiences. This occurs when they are able to regulate overwhelming emotions, make sense of what has happened to them, and find hope for the future. We will discuss the powerful role that managers, coworkers, and organizations more broadly can play in this process, and relate these insights to the struggles experienced by so many in the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Our Guest: Sally Maitlis

Sally Maitlis is Professor of Organizational Behavior and Leadership at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Her research examines how people make sense of important, challenging and often painful issues at work, and highlights the emotional side of organisational life. She has a particular interest in processes of suffering, healing and growth in the workplace and is a founding member of the Compassion Lab, an international group of scholars who study compassion in organizations. Another stream of research explores the joys and struggles of those pursuing the work that feels most meaningful to them, including the experience of losing the ability to do that work. Sally is the Academic Director of the Oxford High Performance Leadership programme at Oxford Saïd, and contributes to a variety of other executive programmes as well as working as a leadership coach and therapist. She has degrees in Psychology, Organizational Behaviour, and Counselling Psychology and this combination of disciplines underpins her research, teaching, coaching, and therapeutic work.

Jennifer Hancock is the author of several award winning books and the founder of Humanist Learning Systems. Jennifer is considered one of the top speakers and writers in the world of Humanism today. Her professional background is varied including stints in both the for profit and non-profit sectors. She has served as Director of Volunteer Services for the Los Angeles SPCA, sold international franchise licenses for a biotech firm, was the Manager of Acquisition Group Information for a ½ billion dollar company and served as the executive director for the Humanists of Florida before founding her own company. Elizabeth Castillo is an associate professor at CISA – Leadership and Interdisciplinary Studies at Arizona State University and affiliated faculty at the Center for Behavior, Institutions and the Environment.Castillo’s scholarship is focused on how we can create a sustainable economy that works for everyone. Dr. Castillo addresses this problem by investigating capitalization of organizations, particularly the role that intangible assets (e.g., social, cultural, and political capital) play in producing social, financial, and environmental returns (the triple bottom line). Her interdisciplinary research is inspired by two decades of management experience in the nonprofit sector, including the San Diego Natural History Museum and Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.
