Owned by Oxford is a pilot project working to bring wealth and power back home for local people through community wealth building. Our webinar will consider how to grow locally led, community owned businesses that meet local needs and tackle inequalities.

Oxford has a wealth problem. There’s no shortage of money in our City, it’s just not fairly distributed. And that’s a problem for everyone. Owned by Oxford wants to address this problem using Community Wealth Building.

Community wealth building is a people-centred approach to local economic development. It reorganises local economies to be fairer. It stops wealth flowing out of our communities, towns and cities. Instead, it places control of this wealth into the hands of local people.

Owned by Oxford is all about redirecting wealth back into the local economy, under community control and for community benefit. Our aim is to grow locally led, community owned businesses that meet local needs and tackle Oxford’s inequalities. We’ll do this by integrating community economic development with the purchasing power and assets of larger organisations.

The project is led by CAG Oxfordshire on behalf of a delivery partnership including: Makespace Oxford, Solidarity Economy Association, Oxford City Council and Aspire.

Anna Thorne works for CAG Oxfordshire as Coordinator of the Owned by Oxford project.

CAG consists of over 85 groups across Oxfordshire who are at the forefront of community led climate change action tackling issues including waste, transport, food, energy, biodiversity and social justice.

Started in 2001, the network is the largest of its kind in the UK, running over 2,000 events per year, attended by around 80,000 local residents and contributing over 20,000 volunteer hours to the county.
