If you are curious about doing some consultancy but are not sure where to start or whether it is for you, then come along to this lunch and learn session to find out more and ask questions in a dedicated space!

Expert speakers from Oxford University Innovation and Cambridge Enterprise will join us to detail how you can add value for yourself and clients by consulting alongside your research.

This session is for any member of staff interested in applying their knowledge and perspectives to problems in industry, commerce and government via consultancy during their research.

The speakers will introduce you to the world of academic consultancy, from acting as an expert to providing specialist advice. Consulting can enable you to make an impact, on organisations and on people within those organisations. They will also introduce you to the support Oxford and Cambridge Universities can offer you when consulting.

Key questions we will cover:

  • What is consultancy?
  • Why do consultancy – motivations and benefits?
  • The consultancy project life cycle
  • Introducing the university support systems
  • How to get started with consultancy – different types of consultancy projects, is it consultancy or research?
  • Key issues to consider
  • How you can promote yourself and develop your skills
  • Case studies of researchers who have consulted and added value to their future careers
  • Time for Q&A!

Note: In Oxford, consultancy is open to any academic, employee or student -with prior supervisor approval.

In Cambridge, any employee can do consultancy work, including PhD students but they must be supervised.
