Maggie Wainwright, Owner of Hensholidays

 

Maggie is an Oxford-based entrepreneur who started Hensholidays,  where she boards hens in her back garden while their families are away.

Q: What is your background?  Why are you doing this?
A: I worked as a midwife in the NHS for 28 years then decided to change career doing various jobs and now I have a wonderful life as a library assistant in Magdalen College Library.  When I went to the RSA 2 years ago for a month there was no one in Oxfordshire to look after my 4 rescue hens, so on my return I investigated the idea of starting up a business looking after chickens.

Q: What is your definition of entrepreneurship?
A: Problem solving

Q: What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?
A:  I thought it would be exciting to try something different.

Q: So what would you say are the top skills that needed to be a successful entrepreneur? Why?
A: Being flexible and knowing what you want.

Q: What is your favourite part of being an entrepreneur?
A: I can change things as I like.

Q: What individual, company or organization inspires you most? Why?
A: Oxfam, because of their capacity to try new ideas and be trustworthy.

Q: If you could have 5 minutes with the above indiv/company/org, what would you want to ask or discuss?
A: I would want to discuss what their future plans are.

Q: What has been your most satisfying or successful moment in business?
A : Last summer when I had 19 boarders of all different breeds, I get to look after some beautiful hens and they are just so funny!

Q: What would you say have been some of your mistakes as an entrepreneur?
A:  Buying cheap coops.

Q: What is good about being an entrepreneur in Oxfordshire?  Bad?
A:  Oxfordshire is good for me as there are so many people who have chickens in their back gardens.
