#homelesshack is a 2-day event for anyone interested in helping tackle the problem of homelessness in Oxford and support those currently facing it. It builds on other HomelessHack events in London and Manchester but seeks to engage the Oxford/Oxfordshire digital and third sector communities in helping to reduce the specific problems of homelessness in Oxford.
Information and resources available at https://homelesshack.github.io
What's the problem? A total of 433 different people were seen sleeping rough in the City during the period April 2015 and March 2016. 263, or 60%, were seen sleeping rough for the very first time. Quarterly data from 2016/17 however, shows that the majority of people rough sleeping in the City are already known to services from previous periods/instances of rough sleeping. A recent street count (November 2016) counted 33 people. Estimates in 2016 had 79 people rough sleeping across Oxfordshire on a typical night (Oxford City, 47; Cherwell, 17; West Oxfordshire, 0; South Oxfordshire, 7; Vale of White Horse, 8).
How will it work? Experts from charities, local business will come together with service designers, policy professionals, data analysts, developers, researchers and people with lived experience to see if we can create some useful things to help. There will be people who know what's needed, people who know what data is available and where to find it, and people who can take on the ideas and prototypes from the event and find ways to make them happen. You need to bring your own laptop and are also free to play around with any devices, sensors etc. Oxford Hackspace is letting us use their space for both days, so access to guest wi-fi, and prototyping materials will be available. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done this before. Experience hack veterans will be around to mention and facilitate discussion on both days.
